Livelihoods

Following are some examples of NIDPRODEV projects focusing on Livelihoods:

CURRENT

  • Community Teachers to Deliver Simple Bookkeeping to 660 Livelihood Participants
Twenty-two (22) teachers from ten Niger Delta communities have been trained by NIDPRODEV to teach Simple Bookkeeping and Business Management Skills to 660 participants in an Oxfam-Novib sponsored project to enhance livelihoods. Seventy percent (70%) of the participants are women.

  • ON Livelihoods and Governance (ONLAG)
The ONLAG project is intended to strengthen current livelihoods and identify alternative means of sustainable livelihoods. Included in the project are efforts to strengthen and facilitate the ability of local business to access micro-credit (soft loans) through collaboration with micro-finance banks.

  • Mindset Change and Reorientation Programme
The Mindset Change and Reorientation Programme is a 3-month, in-residence training programme for 150 youth from 13 oil-producing communities in the often volatile Niger Delta. The programme is a pilot test as well as first phase of the Job Creation and Conflict Prevention Initiative, and is jointly funded by the United Nations Development Programme, Shell, and Delta State Government; is managed by UNOPS; and is being implemented by Niger Delta Professionals for Development (NIDPRODEV). NIDPRODEV developed the programme’s training manuals, trained the trainers, and is involved in the day-to-day operations of the programme at a multi-purpose training facility in Delta State. Upon successful completion of the programme, trainees are eligible to participate in a one-to-two-year vocational training programme.

The programme’s course content includes, but is not limited to, psycho-social development, basic life skills, conflict management skills, civic education, and vocational guidance counseling.

PAST

  • DESOPADEC Micro Credit Programme
An economic enhancement and income generation programme implemented in 2009, aimed at strengthening micro enterprise development among the rural poor population.
